Best of 2012 – Photo posts

I could have posted every single session of 2012.  I had such a great year, with so many wonderful clients.  My business flourished this year, and I could not feel more fortunate or blessed.  I was given opportunities to push my photography beyond my limits of what I thought I was capable.  I had such a great year and I’m so looking forward to 2013 and upcoming sessions.  I am looking forward to pushing myself in new ways and to keep on this path I’ve had laid out for me.  Here are just SOME of my highlights for 2012.  These were the sessions that helped shape me as an artist this year.  The milestones for both my art and my business.  The photos I keep close to my heart.

Meet the Higbees | Southern Utah Family Photographer

I have been so excited to share this session.

I feel like I’m saying that about every session right now.  I’ve had such a great year.

Most of my clients become sweet friends and what a blessing that has been!  I can’t imagine my life without some of my friends who started out as clients, isn’t that crazy?

Laura is a good one.  She is the sister of one of my best friends (who started out as a client) and now we’ve become good friends as well.  I cannot explain how excited I was to photograph this special time for Laura.  I can’t wait for her to have that sweet baby!

Mike and Laura have such a great family.  They’ve got so much love between the two of them and they both just absolutely adore that little Miles.  I know their new baby will be showered in love as well.  I traveled up to Cedar for their session while it was still so pretty out.  We had such a beautiful session.

Lydia’s Birth Day | Southern Utah Birth Photographer

Do you remember this sweet family?  I had such a wonderful time sharing in their experiences of bringing their tiny new baby girl into the world.

For their maternity session, Cheri had thought of so many sweet and thoughtful details.  During their session, we talked about the new baby and what she would look like.  I was so inspired by how tender their love as a family was and the excitement and anticipation of this new little one was almost intoxicating.  I couldn’t wait for her birth.

Just as I suspected, her much anticipated arrival was nothing short of wonderful.  We all wept tears of happiness (oh yes, I cry at every birth) and marveled over this beautiful little babe.

Her birth story speaks for itself, so I’ll let it to the talking from here on out.

Enjoy!

Expecting a little one | Southern Utah Maternity Photographer

HELLO dear friends.  I have been working on some major projects here at CMP, I can’t wait to share them with you.  Please excuse my absence while I’m working on these changes.. sometimes my children like to have a mother and I just can’t seem to find enough hours in the day to do everything!  Soon though, I’ll be back my regular bloggin’.

Let me tell you a little about my summer thus far.  It has been full of busy, busy, busy.  We’ve started our traveling and as much as it wears me out, it feeds my soul in such wonderful ways.  I love my travel sessions and I love that I can do this as part of my work. What is making my summer, though is all the wonderful sessions and projects I’m working on both near and far.  I always feel like I have the best clients, but this summer something has changed, something has clicked.  My clients are so wonderful and have opened up to me in such amazing ways.  I’ve been a part of love stories, baby stories and become a part of a handful of families.  I am loving where my life is right now and I’m feeling so blessed to be a part of such wonderful people’s stories. This maternity session is so close to my heart.  Cheri and her sweet family allowed me to come into their home for a chunk of their day to really let me see their family for who they are.  As you all know, I’m quite obsessed with all things pregnancy, birth and babies, and to be part of this time for Cheri and her family to me is priceless.

Enjoy!

I hope you’re all having a wonderful summer!

Welcome Baby Brooks | Southern Utah Birth Photographer

Birth for me is more than just a session that I photograph, it’s more than an action or just another day on the job.  Birth is my take-your-breath-away-goose-bumps-knot-in-your-stomach-divine-calling-from-the-heavens passion.  I love birth.  I love giving birth, I love witnessing birth, I love talking about birth, and I absolutely treasure photographing birth.
To me, there is no other act on this world more beautiful.  There is nothing else that is more close to the Heavens above.  There is no greater or more divine calling in this universe.  For me to be able use my talents in a way that I can document a woman’s journey of bringing her new baby into the world is an absolute blessing to me.
It’s hard for me to describe, but luckily, I can show you what I mean. :)

Jessica is a dear friend of mine.  You have seen her grace this blog a few times, the most recent being her sweet maternity session.  Jessica is such a great mom, so sweet and affectionate to her boys and when she asked me to photograph her birth, I was absolutely elated.  She and Dallas have such a great connection and being able to witness that in such an intimate moment in their life was so amazing.

Thank you, Griffins, for having me!  Congrats on that sweet little man.
xoxo

Let’s Get Personal | Southern Utah Lifestyle Photographer

So, things are changing here at cassidymillerphotography, or cassmillerphoto, rather.. whichever you prefer.
You see, last year when I started this blog I had a dream.  A dream to create art, to shoot people and families and birth.  To book clients on a regular basis and do what I LOVE to do, because I do.  I love it.  Like wrap-my-arms-around-it-and-give-it-a-big-smooch-on-the-mouth kind of love it.  I don’t think I should have to play all coy, like “oh yeah, I’m a birth photographer, what?” I think I should be able to say, “I’m a birth photographer and I am the luckiest person in the world.  I could do cartwheels right now just telling you what I do.” (except I can’t really do cartwheels, let’s just be real here) Because that’s more what I feel like.
So, back to last year.  I made some goals and dreams and wouldn’t you know?  They came true.  They came true in ways I could have never imagined.  I had people willing to share their most intimate moments with me.  I had clients that wanted ME to document their family.  I had wonderful artists that were giving me credit for MY ART.  I was featured on blogs that I once scrolled through imagining my photos on the pages. I was contacted and hired by the OWN network for crying out loud! (more on that later)  And I’m proud, and I’m happy and I’m so blessed to be able to make this little dream of mine a reality.
But that begs the question, what now?
Well, 2012 has got me thinking.  I took the month off in January (I’m going to be honest again and tell you that I was feeling really burned out, like my work was getting flat, and I was sick of living behind my camera) and that time off helped me to really re-vamp my thought process.  I also attended WPPI this year for the first time ever, and left feeling so inspired, so excited, and so in love with photography all over again.  I’ve kept replaying Becky Earl’s question to me last March, “Cass, what do you love to shoot?” and I love to shoot families and birth.  But what I love about families is not the best location that they choose, and not the snazzy, matching outfits that they wear, or how pretty they are.  While that’s all great and golden, it’s the connection for me that is so intriguing.  It’s capturing the personalities that’s the exciting challenge.  It’s showing the family, this is how you love eachother. isn’t it magnificent?! that gives me goose bumps and keeps me warm at night. (okay, maybe that’s the Mr. keeping me warm, but I feel like the client thing helps, too)
So this year, I am asking you to open up to me.  To get really personal, and let me document you.  The real you.  The kind of you that snuggles with your kids when they wake up from their naps, and greets your husband at the door.  The kind of you that nurses your baby.  The kind of you that plays with your kids.  The kind of you that can say, this is my family and we’re so perfect for each other.

Too much to ask?  Well, I hope you’ll consider it anyway.

I got into this business because I wanted to document other families in the way I wanted my own family documented, and that’s still what motivates me as I document the beautiful families that grace this blog, and grace my life.

So if you’ve made it this far (I clearly had a lot to get off my chest today, didn’t I?!) I hope that you will enjoy this session of Jessica and Drake in the perfect way they love.

Did I really suggest a 9 month pregnant person to get on a trampoline? Yes… but I fed her ice cream afterwords, so it’s all good.

Meet the Brinkerhoffs | Southern Utah Family Photographer

I love my job.  I love it so much, it sounds a little strange to call it a “job”.  To have the opportunity to share such special moments with these families, all the while being able to document them in my own artistic style is beyond what I could have ever imagined doing for a living.  My work for me is very personal.  My clients become close friends and I enjoy so much watching their children grow.

Juanita is an amazing photographer here in St. George.  While it is always nerve-wracking for me to photograph another photographer, the challenge and artistic collaboration is always refreshing and inspiring.  Juanita really respected my personal style and let me choose every detail of the session.  I had an idea to shoot at a more desert-y location, so we finished up our session out there.  I’m so glad Juanita trusted me with it because they are probably my favorite shots of the session.  What a beautiful family they are!  I can’t wait to meet that new little baby sister she’s got hiding in that tiny belly of hers.

Hansen Maternity | St. George Maternity Photographer

Did you miss me?  Sorry I was MIA, I was just celebrating my birthweek (like a birthday, but all week long) Well that was fun, but now to catch up on my bloggin’…

(side note: All these photos were edited with Errin Andrus’ ‘love it quick’ action.  SUCH a cool action.  If you’re the type that doesn’t love to spend a few hours in front of the computer editing, this is your new BFF.. Also check out Errin’s other lovely actions, HERE.)

Amanda is one of my new favorite people.  There are several reasons why, like that she is also an amazing photographer, that she let me do everything that I wanted to do, that she said “I don’t want anything too posed.. I want you to capture my family just as it is.”, that she gave birth to this beautiful baby in the comfort of her own home.. AND LET ME CAPTURE IT, that’s just to name a few.  Add that she is a stunningly beautiful woman and mother of (now) 5.. she is truly an inspiration.  I am so happy to have been able to capture these sessions for her.  Here is the first part of their three sessions with me.

I loved the shots I got of the couple.  After nearly 5 kids they still are just as into eachother as ever.
This cute big sister was absolutely glued to her mama’s belly.  It was so sweet!  Anytime she sat by her mom, she immediately layed her head right onto the belly.
I also loved these candid shots of Amanda with all her babies.
In the middle of trying to sit everyone together, Amanda’s belly started to wiggle a bit and every single hand around was suddenly on the belly.  My camera wasn’t quite on the right settings for the shot, but that didn’t matter to me.  I got that sweet image exactly as it was.

These were some of my favorite shots.  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE when people let me come shoot them in their homes.  It’s always so personal and fun.  The kids always do much better, everyone is a little more relaxed… If you’re about to book a session, I’d recommend using your home as the location.  You wont be disappointed. :)
