Its all about the balance… | St. George Family Photographer

My goodness it’s been too long since my last post.  We have been having a fabulous busy summer but to be honest, I’m struggling with the balance of it all.  I am a busy mom of two little girls.  Harlo is two and Stella is turning one on Wednesday.  Right now my life consists of feeding meals, filling sippies, playing games, changing diapers, reading books, rocking babies, singing songs, diffusing tantrums, bouncing babies, making dinners… the list goes on.  Through this I have sessions piling up in my editing feed and during naptimes, and free seconds, I edit.  We’ve been out of town nearly every weekend this whole month, so I’ve gotten way farther behind than I like to be!  Sometimes I get in a great system where I keep up on my blogging, and sometimes (like now) I can barely get a post in, and if I do it is way, WAY past my bedtime.  I really do vow to be a better blogger, both on this blog and my other blog.  I have so many great sessions I can’t wait to share with you.  August is a great month and I have so many exciting things going on.  I’ll start with a great big family photo session. :)

Brooke has been a close family friend for forever now.  She and her darling family moved to Kentucky a year or two ago and I was so excited when they were coming out to visit that they wanted me to do a photo session for them.  Of course when Brooke asked if they could do a big group shot while they were all here, I said absolutely yes.  What a darling family they are.

Thank you to Brooke who has been amazingly patient through my computer crashing and making her pictures a week late.  (I promise I’ll make it up when I come visit you in Kentucky, Brooke! ;) )

Family California Trip 2011

{July 1st-5th}
We had SUCH a blast in California… We have been longing for “the lotion” (the ocean) since the day we had to peel our girls away.

{Independence Day}
The 4th was kind of a bust this year since most cities in California don’t have fireworks and the ones that do are by donation only. Oceanside didn’t, so we tried to go to Carlsbad but missed them. We did see them from the road for a split second (nothing compared to our firework show here in STG.. it lasted all of 2 minutes) Harlo did catch a glimpse and LOVED them, though. I was a little bit bummed to miss them, but I guess we’re lucky to have the 24th just around the corner! :)

we can’t wait to go back in just a few short weeks! Harlo has been asking to go the lotion every single day since we’ve been home. Doesn’t help that we couldn’t bring Auntie home with us.. :( but more on that later.

Few quick notes from the trip:

  • While we have mastered the sleeping/schedule arrangements with the girls which makes things a lot easier, it still comes with a bit of bickering on the adult end. I think I said or heard “sorry I got snappy with you earlier..” about a zillion times, but at least we can bounce back and forth pretty easily. :) By the next trip I hope I can have fun with my girls and still have time to smooch that husband of mine from time to time.
  • Have I mentioned Harlo doesn’t sleep AT ALL in the car? Not even the whole 8 hour drive to and fro, you ask? Nope. Not even then. Her baby sis is not much better, either. Given the circumstances, Harlo does MIRACULOUSLY in the car the whole way. She does complain a bit that she wants to get down, but a few stops solves that problem. Stella on the other hand would prefer we do not drive for longer than about 30 minutes in the car, and she’s not afraid to let you know how she feels. She slept for oh, I’d say an hour and a half (not all at once) the whole trip there and the rest of the time she was either squawking or crying at us to give her something else to entertain her. We basically feed her into oblivion, but even that doesn’t buy us the time that we’d like.
  • We bought a portable DVD player for the trip this time. Stella didn’t care too much for it at all, but what was funny is that we got the one with the two screens so each kid has their own… well, Harlo watches Stella’s screen and Stella watches Harlo’s. We got a kick out of that.
  • “Grandma Nancy” who is a good family friend came on the trip, too. She has a dog named “Isabo” which Harlo calls “Miserabo” which we giggled about the whole time.
  • The first night there, we stayed at the Chateau Chiniquey (the Chiniquey residence) in Carlsbad which was great, and even more great that Cinjun, Saxon and Teo were there to entertain my ladies. Both girls had an absolute blast! Harlo and Saxon have had a little romance going since they were babies and they are just so freaking cute with eachother. When we got up in the morning, Saxon came downstairs and Harlo says to him, “Saxon! Come get your girls!” (meaning Stella and herself) then when we were leaving I said “say bye to Sax” and she goes “bye Sax.. come over here and give me lubbins!” Needless to say, I think I’ve got my hands full when the teen years start ;)
  • Let it be documented that one night Stella fell asleep in the car and stayed asleep through getting her out, walking a block and eating in a restaurant all while on my shoulder. The real kicker, though, is when during the day, Harlo fell asleep in the car, STAYED ASLEEP through getting her out, walking two blocks up to Ali’s (parking was a little crazy on the 4th) walking up 4 flights of stairs and laying her down peacefully on the bed. Literally, that has never happened in her ENTIRE LIFE. I can’t even get her from the living room to the bedroom without her waking up. I guess if they get tired enough, they’ll konk out, and they’ll stay out!
  • Let it also be documented that Harlo wanted MAMA on the beach the whole time. So unlike her. We ran around in the water and let the waves chase us the. entire. time. We both had so much fun. When I’d want to go sit for a minute and assumed she’d want to hang with Daddy (while he wasn’t floating in with the waves) she would immediately ask for me again. I took it, and I ran with it.
  • Stella had a blast at the beach, but she didn’t like the sand, which actually worked out in our favor because she would sit on a beach mat and totally stay put for as long as we let her. She just looked around pointing at the birdies. Another favorite from the trip is her tan line from her headband. :)
  • This was, hands down, our best family trip EVER. We had so much fun. Just so relaxed, totally did whatever we wanted to do every single day. Yummiest food, funnest city, nicest weather.. everything but the drive down and back was just awesome. Hopefully they just get better and easier from here on out. :)

.Ten Months.

(this post is late.. I wrote it before we went on vacation and accidentally never hit ‘publish’.. whoopsie! 11 months is just around the corner!)
{June 3rd}

Harlo wanted to jump in for a quick shot, too :)

Our little Stelly Bell is growing so fast!
the Tenth month has been a great one..
She is now pulling up to anything and everything and is quite confident.
She will always let go or take a step away from the table and fall down, but doesn’t mind a bit.
She now goes from the coffee table to the couch without a problem (just a small step away)
She is constantly keeping up with Harlo.
She has now just gotten a little sassy with her big sis and will take toys away from harlo and protests when Harlo takes a toy from her.
Needless to say, we don’t need to worry about her getting pushed around by her older sister. :)
She is still a great little eater.
She eats anything and everything now.. rarely ever babyfood.
She quit nursing a couple weeks ago (she was 10 and a half months)
And just last week started refusing bottles, so that makes my life a little easier without having to worry about weaning her from anything!
She takes regular milk out of a sippy cup now, but still likes it warmed up a bit.
She likes her sippies with the soft tops, but prefers Harlo’s ‘big girl sippies’ with the hard top.
So funny.
She always ditches her cup and crawls to Harlo to take hers away.
She’s so proud every time she gets it.
She is an Auntie’s girl to the FULLEST.
If Auntie’s around, no one else in the room exists.
She is such a lovey baby. I really have never met a lovier child.
She will be playing with Harlo and crawl over to me just to give me a giant hug and a big smooch, then get right back down to play.
Absolutely melts my heart.
Everyone needs a Stella in their house.
It’s next to impossible to have a bad day with her around.
She likes a lot of variety in her meals.
Her breakfast usually consists of some yogurt, a banana, whole wheat toast, and some blueberries… something like that.
She will eat, and eat, and eat.. never ever gets full.
She points to everything she wants.
She loves birds and can spot one from miles away.
Her favorite thing about her room is her birdy mobile and has to touch the birds everyday when she wakes up from her nap and say “buh-bye!” to them when we walk out of her room.
She tries to copy any word you tell her to say.
Her favorites right now are probably “har-lo!” and “Stel-la!”
She also loves “It-teh” (Itty) and always wants to know where she is.
She has her two bottom teeth and two top teeth, but not the middle… the ones on either side of the middle.
So she’s a little baby jack-o-lantern :)
She is constantly trying to climb up on everything.. I know I’m about to get real busy with her!
She screams all the time… it’s a huge issue.
By the end of the day, our nerves are all shot from hearing her screech all day long.
It’s not even when she’s sad or mad.. she just does it all the time when she’s bored or when she wants something.. such a stinker!
We have tried EVERYTHING to try to get her to stop, all to no avail.
We’ve realized we just have to suck it up and wait for this stage to pass.
She likes me in her sight at all times, and preferably likes to be right at my feet while playing, if not in my arms.
I do hold her a lot, I think because I know I’m not going to have another baby for a long time (if at all) so I just try to soak up every minute with her wanting to still be in my arms.
I know the days she’s fighting to get down and run are just around the corner.
Call me a spoiler, I don’t care.
I love having a baby on my hip.
I must admit, I did worry about how Stella would find her voice in the family with Harlo being such a strong personality. Stella by nature is much more laid back and goes along with everything so I wondered if she would just always follow Harlo’s lead. I’m happy to say, though, that little girl is very driven. She goes along with Harlo a lot, but she knows what she wants and she gets it. I’m so proud of my little ladies.

Home Sweet Home

Stella and Harlo
Oceanside, CA 2011

We’re home from Oceanside and these two little beach bums are not too happy about it.  They LOVED the ocean (or “lotion” as Harlo called it).  Good thing we’ll be back in just a month! :)
For now we’re (and by “we’re” I mean “they’re”) just catching up on sleep and I’m catching up on editing so if you need me, I’ll be here!
